Monique’s Story:  ‘The Experience Will Last Me a Lifetime’ - Monique White, a biology major at UCSD has been a participant in AEP’s Faculty Mentor Program for more than a year with her mentor Georgia Robins Sadler, Ph.D., MBA, associate clinical professor of surgery at UCSD.  Monique is especially involved with Dr. Sadler in a comprehensive public health effort and follow-up study to inform African American women in San Diego communities of the importance of receiving mammograms and conducting breast self-exams regularly. Their story is an example of the mutually rewarding experience that often develops between student and mentor.

A Transfer Student’s Successful Journey in Research - Melanie Zauscher, a UCSD environmental chemistry major; transferred to UCSD from a local community college. She is a current participant in AEP’s Faculty Mentor Program, and is a former McNair Program scholar. This is her story.

Three UCSD Undergraduates Receive Awards at the SACNAS National Conference in Kansas City - University of California, San Diego undergraduates Jorge Ortiz, Robert Valtierra, and Breena Fraga were recognized for research excellence recently at the national conference of the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS). The conference was held in Kansas City, MO.

AEP Undergraduate Luis Guerrero Wins Top Prize in Mathematics Competition at the 2006 SACNAS National Conference - Luis Guerrero, a senior at the University of California, San Diego, won $2000 from the AMS and a TI-89 Titanium graphing calculator from Texas Instruments in the game Who Wants to Be a Mathematician at the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) national conference in Tampa, FL October 28

UCSD’s CAMP Program Awarded Fellowship From National Science Foundation for Graduate Students - The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded the California Alliance for Minority Participation in Science, Engineering and Mathematics Program (CAMP) at the University of California, San Diego with a $972,000 fellowship to fund 12 graduate students who will be pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees at UCSD.

CAMP Undergraduate Smith-Kruck Honored At Statewide Symposium For Research On Abnormal Brain Development In Mice - Nine UCSD undergraduates presented their research at the annual California Alliance for Minority Participation in Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Program (CAMP) Symposium, held recently at the Beckman Center of the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering in Irvine, CA. Among these students, senior Tyheshia Smith-Kruck won a merit in research award in the Biological/Life Sciences division for her oral presentation.

Undergraduate Nelson Bravo Honored For Robot Design Analysis At National Research Conference - Nelson Bravo, an engineering major at UCSD, was honored for research excellence at the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program National Research Conference held recently in New Orleans, Louisiana. More than 275 undergraduates nationally participated in the annual conference.

The McNair Scholars Program:  Spend Your Summer ‘Pushing The Frontiers of Knowledge’  - With quiet determination, willingness to work hard, and a sense of controlled excitement, UCSD undergraduate Ed Cho has his sights locked in on a Ph.D. degree in economics. Cho had often considered graduate school as a possibility, but his Summer Research Experience last year as a McNair Program Scholar “really helped make my mind up that this is the path I want to take,” he says.

Eight undergraduates from the University of California , San Diego will join other students from campuses across the country in April at the 20 th Anniversary celebration of the National Conferences on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) to present findings on individual research studies they have conducted under faculty mentors.
