Faculty Mentor Program (FMP)

FAQ

Will I get credit for my participation?

Yes!  You will be eligible to earn 4-units of credit per semester through your departmental 199.  Please see the AEP (aep.ucsd.edu) website for a list of department representatives and instructions on how to file a 199 petition.

Will a mentor be given to me?

No, in order to find the best match you must do the research to find a mentor.  We have useful tools including a worksheet on “How To Find a Mentor” and an e-mail template on how to contact a mentor on our website (aep.ucsd.edu).  If you have used these resources and are still having trouble finding a mentor, feel free to se up a 1-1 appointment with vsalazar@ucsd.edu.

What is the difference between FMP and the RA/Emergency Department program?

The RA program is a division of the FMP.  You can read more about the RA/Emergency department program on the website (aep.ucsd.edu).  You can apply to both, but you may only be accepted to one. 

When will I hear back about my acceptance into RA or FMP?

You will be informed of which program you are chosen for by the week of November 9, 2009.  RA is very competitive, so if you are applying please think of a mentor as well who you can work with if you are not selected for the RA program.

What are the requirements to participate in FMP?

To participate in FMP you must meet the following requirements:

-Have at least a 2.7 cumulative GPA by the beginning of Winter quarter
-Have 90 units or junior standing

What is the time commitment for FMP?

FMP is a program that runs from the beginning of Winter quarter to the end of Spring quarter.  You must commit two quarters of time, 10 hours a week.  Consider FMP to be like an additional class in your schedule.

What are the benefits of joining FMP?

There are many incentives to joining the Faculty Mentor Program.  In addition to earning the opportunity to present research in the Spring Symposium you will have:  Access to other programs in the AEP office, possible funding opportunities, graduate school and professional school workshops, mentorship guidance.
